Guide to ICP Classification Criteria
Most B2B revenue teams describe their Ideal Customer Profile in a paragraph. That is not a classification system — it is a wish. This guide gives you a repeatable framework for classifying accounts so outbound, marketing, and RevOps operate on the same definition of "qualified".
Why ICP classification matters
Signal-driven outreach only compounds when the underlying account list is tiered. Without classification, every meeting looks equally valuable and sales capacity is spent on accounts that will never close. Classification turns a static list into a routing rulebook.
The four criteria layers
Firmographic Criteria
- Industry / vertical (NAICS or SIC code)
- Headcount band and department size
- Annual revenue range
- Geography and regulatory jurisdiction
- Funding stage or ownership structure
Technographic Criteria
- Core systems of record (CRM, ERP, MAP)
- Adjacent tools that indicate maturity
- Competitor products already in use
- Integration surface (APIs, data warehouses)
Behavioural & Intent Criteria
- Hiring signals for relevant roles
- Funding, M&A, or leadership changes
- Third-party intent surges on target topics
- Engagement with owned content or events
Disqualifiers
- Sub-scale revenue or headcount
- Regulated markets you cannot serve
- Active contract with a direct competitor
- No identifiable economic buyer
Tiering the classified list
Once every account is scored against the four layers, collapse the score into three tiers. Tiering is what makes an ICP operational rather than theoretical.
Tier 1 — Perfect Fit
Matches every firmographic, technographic, and behavioural criterion. Highest priority for 1:1 outbound and account-based motions.
Tier 2 — Strong Fit
Matches firmographics and most technographics but lacks one qualifying signal. Route into nurture sequences until an intent trigger fires.
Tier 3 — Adjacent Fit
Shares vertical or size profile but lacks confirmed pain signals. Suitable for broad awareness campaigns and content distribution only.
Operationalising the classification
Store the tier and its underlying criteria in your CRM as first-class fields. Every outbound sequence, ad audience, and SDR queue should read from that field — not from a manual list. Re-score quarterly; ICP drifts as your product and market evolve.
